OBJECTIVES: In a large retrospective study, the association of smoking with human papillomavirus (HPV) genotype and vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VAIN) grade was analyzed. RESULTS: We identified specimens from 111 patients (age range 15-84); 64% (n=71) were diagnosed with high-grade VAIN (HGVAIN) and 36% (n=40) with low-grade VAIN (LGVAIN).

METHODS: Over a 4-year period (September 1997 to September 2001), 68 patients were prospectively diagnosed with PMR in an outpatient rheumatology department, of which only 55 patients (38 women, 17 men) aged 50 to 90 years (mean 74.1 +/- 8.1) were able to specify the month of onset of symptoms.

Males aged 80-85 could be protected from ischemic stroke by higher levels of adenosine (determined by the ADA2 allele). The decrease of ADA2 carriers in males over 85 may depend essentially on immunological factors; reduced levels of adenosine protect from asthma and other pulmonary diseases and lead to a reduced activation of inflammatory cells and pro-inflammatory cytokines production. Moreover, the low level of adenosine may potentiate the activity of NK and other cellular effectors against tumor cells

CONCLUSIONS: The tinted IOL was significantly more effective for photoentrainment of the circadian rhythm with newer action spectra. The computational results suggest that the effectiveness of the tinted IOL in 60- to 85-year-old patients would be within +6% to -13% of that in 30 to 39 year olds. Both tinted and untinted IOLs are expected to be effective for melatonin suppression under average household illumination.

Results (N=883, aged 65 to 98 years) revealed that (a) affection was relatively high and status was relatively low in all age and loss groups; behavioral confirmation showed negative age and loss effects but was better predicted by loss; (b) the three needs relate differentially to indicators of subjective well-being: affection and behavioral confirmation relate positively to life satisfaction; status and behavioral confirmation relate positively to positive affect and negatively to negative affect.

Using an O2 consumption rate of 1 fmol/min/cell, which was not observed in any transformant among 158 derived from individuals 20 weeks (fetal) to 37 years of age, as a cut-off to identify respiratory-deficient clones, 11 such clones were found among 198 transformants derived from individuals 39-103 years of age.

The stiffness of the human cornea increases by a factor of approximately two between the ages of 20 and 100 years. This variation is relevant to the algorithms used to predict the response to incisional and ablative refractive surgery and will also impact on the formulae used to calculate intraocular pressure by applanation.
